Xero Tip Of The Month July 2017 - Tailored Account Codes In Xero

A new expense? A new loan? – There’s a code for that!

For many of us, our businesses can be fairly unique and on occasion we might need some element of customisation to make managing them that little bit easier. With this in mind, often standard chart of account codes does not suffice.

In Xero it is extremely easy to tailor your own chart of accounts to exactly how you need them. Be it an expense code for a new cost not previously incurred, or even taking out a new loan and naming it so it is easily identifiable when creating new transactions.

Either of these can significantly speed up your bookkeeping and allows for ultimate organisation of your financial information.

Amending the chart of accounts for a new business, or even businesses already on their Xero journey can seem like an intimidating task, particularly when there is a large number of codes required for optimum customisation. This may be setting up from scratch, or even importing from another accounting system while carrying out a conversion.

Xero makes this process extremely easy with the ability to export the chart off accounts as a .CSV file and allow for mass manipulation. Here you can edit the account type (Income/Expense) and even the default Tax rate for cash coding from the bank. Then simply re-import these back into Xero and you are all set.

Better still, should you want to keep a close eye on a particular account, Xero allows you to add any code, be it revenue, expenses or even banks to the dashboard so they are always visible whenever you need them.

Why not tailor your Xero to the unique requirements of your business, and reap the rewards. Greater clarity on financial reporting, increased organisation and greater working efficiency allowing you more time to do what you do best, running your business.
