An interview with Paul Miller, Managing Director of Cornish Accounting Solutions

When and why did you set up Cornish Accounting Solutions?

I set it up on the 1st March 1994 as I realised that technology was changing the role of the accountant and the services offered, and I wanted to be able to do this – something which my old partners were not willing to do.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The variety, and meeting and having conversations with all sorts of people

What is your proudest achievement with Cornish Accounting Solutions?

When I started in 1994 I had a portfolio of 70 clients from my old firm. Today we still have half of these as clients.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I had absolutely no idea!

What 3 words would your friends use to describe you?

Driven, focussed and a people person. Or I hope they would!

Who or what inspires you?

I strongly believe that there is a better way and we all can achieve it, hence my ‘why’ on the video – to help business realise their true potential.

In a single sentence, how would you define success?

To be in a happy state where you are satisfied with your lot.

If your life was to be made into a film, which actor would you like to play your role?

John Wayne from ‘The Searchers’.

If you were an animal, which animal would you be and why?

Something that is tenacious and never gives up – whatever that is!

If you had 3 tips for people setting up a new business, what would they be?

Stay focused on your goal, never accept second best and surround yourself with people that you trust.

What is your favourite part about living and working in Cornwall?

Being close to the sea so I can go body boarding.

If you could have dinner with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would you pick and why?

Nelson Mandela to understand how you keep pursuing your dream and see it realised.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Tell us an interesting fact about Paul Miller that we (probably) don’t already know.

I was invited to, and attended, a Buckingham Palace garden party.
